The Lights Festival Returns!

The beautiful Lights Festival in Quito has attracted more than one million people for three years in a row. And it’s back for a fourth one! This summer, the historic centre in the capital of Ecuador will be glowing- literally.

The call for projects that wish to be part of the 2019 Light Festival have started! Inscriptions are open until Sunday March 31st. This is the fourth consecutive year that this event will take place in Quito, the capital of Ecuador. This event is an art festival organized by the Municipality of the capital in collaboration with the Mayor of Lyon, France.

According to the Ministry of Culture, in order for this program to become a truly participatory process, it is essential that national artists and cultural managers join this proposal. The call is open to civil society, universities, professional associations, neighborhoods, collectives, companies and independent artists. They will get the opportunity to present their ideas and projects.

The proposal for 2019 is for the Historic Center to become a free territory for Art. Artists of all kinds will be welcome to the Casco Colonial, with the only recommendation not to occupy the streets with the greatest pedestrian traffic.

According to information from the Municipality, more than 1 360 000 people who entered the city from different provinces of the country were mobilized by land. The high influx of visitors generated more than USD 19 million in profits for the city, according to the authorities balance.

Last year there were 135 proposals, of which 12 winning projects were chosen. The budget was around USD 100 000.
