First Ecological Airport on the Galapagos Islands
The Director of Ecuadorian National Aviation announced on March 31st that the Galapagos Islands will be the first to have an ecological airport in the world by 2011 with an investment of approximately 21 million dollars.
This unprecedented project plans to build a high-quality terminal considering environmental-friendly and ecologically low-impact standards, based on three key actions:
- Optimize natural conditioning.
- Lower in a significant matter the use of energy for refrigeration purposes.
- Maximize the use of natural light on the inside of the terminal and integrate renewable energy systems.
Due to the permanent and intense air traffic generated by the constant arrival and departure of visitors to the Islands, the Airport is source to two types of prejudicial contamination: atmospheric and acoustic, both originated from motor vehicles and airplanes.
The first ecological airport of the World will be built on Baltra Island; the Airport will have a construction of around six thousand square meters with a capacity of receiving 8 to 10 daily flights from/to the Mainland. Some of its main characteristics will be, among others:
The incorporation of renewal energy systems on the roof to support the terminal's energy demand and the installation of solar panels for water heating, avoiding using conventional fuel or electricity to satisfy the terminal's water demand.
