Old Trade Route
Between Samaipata and Sucre you can find the Old Trade Route. This route leads along several old villages and ruins. It was used to transport goods from one point to another. It is thought that is was even used by the Inca’s. It leads through many beautiful valleys and other great landscapes. On the way you can also visit some villages which are connected to the legendary Che Guevarra, such as Vallegrande where he was once buried underneath the airstrip after being executed.
During the colonial period, many beautiful haciendas and other houses have been built along the route. They are definitely a joy to the eye, just like all the other things you will see on this old trade route.

Historical City of Sucre
Sucre is the capital of Bolivia. In 1825 the independence was declared in the Casa de la Libertad, the House of Freedom, in this city by Simón Bolívar and Antonio José de Sucre. Both these freedom fighters were once president of Bolivia. The Casa de la Libertad is now a museum in which numerous presidents of Bolivia are honoured with portraits.
The city offers a lot of colonial history; churches, monasteries and many museums. Most buildings are white of colour and therefore Sucre is often called ´the white city´. Because of these beautiful maintained colonial buildings and churches, Sucre is on the list of world heritage sites from UNESCO. The city is more quiet and peaceful than some other big cities. Also the climate is more pleasant than in the cold on the Altiplano and the heat in the east of the country.

Colonial City of Potosi
This colonial city is situated on a height of a bit more than 4000m. In 1987 the city was declared as cultural heritage of humanity by UNESCO. Potosí houses a lot of architecture in Baroque style. It has always been a very wealthy city, because of the presence of the silver in the mines. The wealth was a part of every day life and the art in Baroque style reached a level that has never been equalised in any place in the world.
A building which reminds of this style and wealth is the Casa de la Moneda. This is the biggest and most important civil colonial building of America. It was built in the 18th century. In that time it was used to make coins, first by man- and horsepower and later on by steam-engines. Nowadays it’s a very interesting museum; everything is still in its original place. You can admire collections of coins, furniture and pieces of art. The first coin of the Republic of Bolivia can be found here.

Uyuni Salt Lake
The Salar de Uyuni is an enormous salt plain which is situated on a height of around 3700 m. With a surface of 12.000 km2 it’s the biggest and most stretched out saltpan in the world. In the distance this plain is surrounded by the mighty peaks of the Andes.
In some places you will find little islands. The most well-known is the Isla de Pescado. On this island grow enormous amounts of giant cactuses from around 10 to 12 m high. A walk on this island is a great experience with beautiful views. Other parts of this landscape houses among others also flamingo’s, alpaca’s and viscacha’s.
In the thick layer of salt, in some places even 40 m thick, you can see the salt crystals. Also the hexagons on the surface will fascinate you. These figures with six corners are the natural shape which the salt takes on.

Sun Island
The Island of the Sun is situated in Lake Titicaca and can be well visited from Copacabana. Legend says that the first Inca’s mystically appeared here after a direct order of the sun. There’s a lot to see on the island. Most boat trips from Copacabana only visit the south part of the island. Here you can find the Pilko Kaina, a temple which was built by an Inca leader. This temple is the only Inca temple with its original roof. Furthermore you can find the Inca Stairway and Inca Springs. The water streams down alongside the staircase of 1001 steps. Spaniards thought the spring was a fountain of youth, but nowadays the local people use the water for their daily life.
On the northern part of the island you can visit several ruins. The most important attraction there is the Rock of the Puma, or Titi Khar’ka, which is believed to be the stone from were the sun and the first Inca leader have risen. Furthermore you can find here the Footprints of the Sun. These are natural markings which resemble footprints. Legend says that these footprints were made by the sun after it was born on the Titicaca rock.
